Aldeacentenera – Puente del Conde and La Coraja

Aldeacentenera is one of the municipalities in the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara UNESCO Geopark. Cultural history, landscapes and trails offer different perspectives on the area, from a special monument to natural areas within the municipality.

Culture and history

The Puente del Conde is a cultural asset of special interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) jointly managed by Aldeacentenera and Cabañas del Castillo in the category of monument. The bridge is 65 metres long and dates from the 15th century. From the eastern edge of Aldeacentenera, the Puente del Conde can be reached via a paved track and then a 280-metre-long footpath.

The Castro La Coraja has a fortified enclosure; a group of dwellings was discovered inside. About 500 metres from the Castro La Coraja lies a necropolis with more than 70 excavated urn graves. Some of the orthostats at the La Coraja passage tomb bear symbolic engravings.

The La Coraja dolmen is located in a former Vettonian castro; one of its dwellings uses the dolmen as part of a wall. The Castro La Coraja is located on the Finca de la Coraja, about five kilometres from Aldeacentenera, and is dated to around the 4th century BC.

In the El Ejido natural complex, there is a reconstruction of the Celtic structures of the Castro La Coraja. The reconstruction was built for cultural, educational and tourism activities. The main altar, dating from the 18th century, is designed in the Baroque style.

The combination of fortified remains, a burial site, a dolmen and a reconstruction illustrates different forms of cultural heritage in the area around La Coraja.

Nature and trails

The northern part of the municipality of Aldeacentenera is home to lagoons and steppes of great ornithological importance. The Ruta de las Avutardas is a route associated with Aldea del Obispo (La), Aldeacentenera and Torrecillas de la Tiesa.

The lagoons and steppes in the northern part of the municipality represent a different focus from the route connecting the three towns. Considering both themes side by side gives Aldeacentenera both a connection to the landscape and a connection to a route extending beyond the municipality. The route’s different connections to the towns can also be considered separately from the individual buildings and archaeological sites.
