Casar De Palomero – Culture, Trails and Holiday Apartment
Casar De Palomero can be explored on a tour through three historic quarters, marked with the emblems of the Christian cross, the Arab crescent and the Jewish star.
Culture
The Basilica de la Cruz Bendita is an 18th-century church built over a former synagogue. The Iglesia del Espíritu Santo also dates from the 18th century, was built over a former mosque and is located in the Arab quarter of Casar De Palomero.
The Convento de San Marcos de Altamira was built in Casar De Palomero in the 15th century. From its location, the Ermita Puerto del Gamo offers expansive views; an inscription on the building states that Jews threw stones at the Holy Cross on Good Friday in March 1488.
The main festivals of the Cruz Bendita take place on 3 and 4 May, 16 July and 14 September. On the eve of each of these festivals, the „Velá“ takes place. The Piedra de la Rueca petroglyph displays a tangle of intersecting straight lines with arrowheads, ladder-like shapes and cup marks on a rock surface, as well as an oval figure resembling a distaff.
Olive Oil and History
The Centro de Interpretación del Aceite is located in a restored former olive oil mill and illustrates the processing of olives into oil as well as the various stages of oil production. Olive oil tastings are offered at the Museo del Olivo in Casar De Palomero. By prior appointment, the same museum also offers activities for school groups.
For planning purposes, religious buildings, historic quarters, museum themes and individual traces on rock can be considered conceptually as different cultural focal points.
Trails and Water
The route to Pico de Altamira is designated as easy and walkable and runs along forest tracks and roads. A 9-kilometre route leads from Casar De Palomero to Pico de Altamira. The information on the type and length of the route describes different aspects of the same travel planning: the character of the route and its extent.
Next to the old bridge over the Río de los Ángeles is a natural bathing area. From Casar De Palomero, the bathing area can be reached via Calle Cordero, Avenida de los Ángeles and then the EX-369.
Townscape
El Puente on the Río Los Ángeles is associated with Casar De Palomero. The square in Casar De Palomero, lined with arcades, includes the Casa de Acacio Terrón, the recently restored town hall and a functioning fountain with four spouts.
