Romangordo – Santa Catalina, Nature and Holiday Apartment
The Church of Santa Catalina features an extraordinary Mudejar coffered ceiling covering the entire nave and chancel; it dates from the late 15th or early 16th century. It is divided into five fully preserved sections.
Culture and History
The parish church of Santa Catalina in Romangordo is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. Romangordo's tourist information office is located in the Casa de los Aromas.
The Puente de Albalat was probably completed in 1552. During the Spanish War of Independence, it was particularly important strategically because it stood on the main road connecting Extremadura and Portugal with Madrid.
The Ruta Albalat leads to the ruins of the Muslim medina of Albalat, dating from the 9th to the 12th century, on the banks of the Tagus. The San Blas Festival is Romangordo's most important festival and is celebrated on 3 February.
The Trampantojos Route displays scenes from local life, as well as the history, customs and culture of Romangordo, on the doors and façades of houses.
Nature and Landscape
The municipality of Romangordo is one of the 14 municipalities within the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve.
The Ruta Bodegas-Mezquita passes through landscapes with holm oaks and cork oaks, then through olive-growing areas, past orchids visible in spring and an old lime kiln.
The Ruta del Cotorro climbs to Cotorro at an elevation of 720 m through a shady cork oak forest.
