Discover Herguijuela: Wine Tradition, Nature and Culture

In December 2022, the Centro de Interpretación Cultura del Vino Sierra de los Lagares was opened in Herguijuela. It is located in a restored former mill.

History and Buildings

The 16th-century Church of San Bartolomé stands on Plaza de España; its main building is a 16th-century work by the master Alonso Becerra, who came from Trujillo. The Diocese of Plasencia lists the parish of San Bartolomé Apóstol on Plaza España in Herguijuela.

A large granite arch from the former church is built into the parish church of San Bartolomé. A small church existed there by no later than the 14th century, and the arch may have belonged to its former supporting ribs.

The Capilla de la Marquesa de Aliseda has a high rectangular interior with up to three cross vaults and decorative finials on the ribs.

The Molino de los Condes de la Calzada olive mill has a conical millstone that rotated on a round stone base onto which the olives were placed. It was operated by a gear mechanism powered by animals; large parts of the predominantly wooden mechanism are visible inside the tower.

The Lavaderos del Camino include a large fountain that formerly supplied the washing basins and animal troughs with water. The Lavaderos del Camino are considered a place worth seeing; the adjacent gardens, stream and trees form the starting point for a pleasant walk.

Herguijuela is traditionally divided into three neighbourhoods: Barrio de Arriba, La Iglesia and Barrio de Abajo. In the area around Herguijuela stands the Pozo del Caño, a prominent historic building.

Landscape and Winegrowing

La Serrezuela is the southern side of the Sierra de los Lagares. Due to the shape of the mountain, its shady hillside location naturally preserves the coolness.

La Serrezuela preserves numerous buildings connected with grape cultivation and wine production.

Nature and Paths

The northeast of Herguijuela is characterised by a mountainous landscape connected with the Sierra de Pedro Gómez. The Sierra de Pedro Gómez is notable for its abundance of birds.

The PR-CC 229 Mirador de la Serrezuela route runs along a concrete path, a track and a trail, and can be travelled by bicycle. The Ruta de las Grullas birdwatching route passes through Herguijuela.

Festivals and Traditions

The La Candelaria festival has been celebrated in Herguijuela since 1700. On 24 August, festivities are held in honour of Saint Bartholomew. On Easter Monday, Herguijuela holds a pilgrimage.

The traditional “matanza” is considered a particularly distinctive folk tradition in Herguijuela.
