Losar De La Vera – Nature, Culture and Puente de Cuartos

Losar De La Vera lies along the Garganta de Cuartos, with natural pools beneath the medieval Puente de Cuartos that are used for swimming in summer. In addition to the natural bathing area, there is an alternative spot by the road for parking vehicles.

Another waterside location is the natural Piscina Natural El Vadillo on the Garganta Vadillo. The site includes a restaurant-bar, a bathing area for children and a car park.

The Ruta del Puente de Cuartos is a 5.6-kilometre circular route with a low level of difficulty. It can be undertaken on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike and is recommended year-round. Its length, difficulty level and possible means of travel give the route a clearly distinguishable profile.

Canyoning in the Garganta Vadillo takes two and a half hours; the longest abseil is 30 metres long. The Refugio del Brezo is a mountain refuge at an altitude of 1,400 metres, accessible from Losar de la Vera via a forest track.

Culture and history

The Puente de Cuartos is a 15th-century granite bridge with two arches, located about two kilometres from the centre of Losar de la Vera. Calle del Agua features an example of the town’s vernacular architecture; a water channel runs through its centre.

The Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago Apóstol has largely preserved its original structure and is known for its architectural value.

The Centro de Interpretación del Paludismo presents a permanent exhibition on the history of malaria in Spain and the campaigns to eradicate it. The centre includes audiovisual displays, a reconstruction of a former malaria distribution centre, temporary exhibitions, as well as rooms for workshops, courses and lectures.

Festivals and local traditions

The Romería de San Isidro is celebrated on 15 May at the Finca El Robledo in the municipality of Losar de la Vera. The programme includes a country mass, a procession and an auction of typical local sweets.

The Fiestas de Agosto – Cristo de la Misericordia take place in mid-August and include traditional bullfights, concerts, open-air dance events and processions.

The Matanza tradicional Losareña is a two-day traditional event held between March and April. It offers tapas featuring typical products from the traditional Extremaduran home slaughter, as well as exhibitions of related crafts and activities.
