Madrigalejo: History, River Landscape and Birdlife

Madrigalejo combines historical remembrance with river landscapes and nature observation. The Complejo Turístico Fernando el Católico stands on the former site of the Casa de Santa María, where King Ferdinand the Catholic died on 23 January 1516.

Culture and History

Exhibition and audiovisual areas provide context for the historical episode associated with Ferdinand the Catholic. The complex also includes an ethnographic museum area, a small archaeological collection with original materials and a reproduction of the Verraco de Madrigalejo. The preserved monastery church of the Augustinian monastery has remnants of original frescoes on its walls. The Berraco Bridge is approximately 50 metres long and has 14 segmental arches.

Nature

The Río Ruecas is one of the Guadiana’s most important tributaries and is approximately 90 kilometres long. It has high ecological and landscape value for Madrigalejo; together with the areas upstream, it complements the recreational, tourism and environmental offering. The observation point is part of the ZEPA Arrozales de Palazuelo y Guadalperales, a protected natural area with significant biological diversity. From the Observatorio de Aves, numerous waterbirds and steppe birds can be observed, including cranes, great bustards, little bustards, mallards, grey herons, white and black storks, as well as western marsh harriers and Montagu’s harriers. The Observatorio de Aves has a high observation tower near an area with permanently water-filled lagoons, from which the activity in the area surrounding the lagoon can be observed.

Getting Around

The Vía Verde Vegas del Guadiana extends for more than 56 kilometres between Villanueva de la Serena and Logrosán and passes through Madrigalejo. The section running through Madrigalejo passes through dehesas, wetlands, agricultural fields and protected natural areas that provide habitats for numerous bird species. It is suitable for walking, cycling and horse riding and has been adapted for people with reduced mobility. The Paseo Fluvial Río Ruecas is a short circular route of just over two kilometres along both banks, taking around half an hour, plus time spent stopping, and passes playgrounds, wooded areas and artistic or historical features.
