Casares de las Hurdes is a starting point for diverse discoveries among river meanders, viewpoints, hiking trails and Hurdana culture. A route of approximately 3.5 kilometres leads from Casares de las Hurdes to the Centro de Interpretación de la Artesanía Hurdana in La Huetre. There, the Centro de Interpretación de la Artesanía Hurdana displays stone houses, embroidery, musical instruments and other local handicrafts.

Landscape between the Río Hurdano and the Sierra

An especially expansive view opens up at the La Pregonera viewpoint. It is located at an altitude of around 1,500 metres and offers views of the valley of the Río Hurdano, the Sierra de Francia in the province of Salamanca and the Sierra de Malcata in Portugal. From there, you can also see the Sierra de la Corredera, the Chorro del Ceño, the landscape of Casares de las Hurdes characterised by rock faces and the meanders of the Río Hurdano.

In the upper reaches of the Río Hurdano between Casares de las Hurdes and the Majá Robledo reservoir, there are particularly impressive meanders, including the Casarrubia meander. From the Majá Robledo area, you can reach a water-supply reservoir near the source of the Río Hurdano. The Cascada del Ceño can be seen from a viewpoint located three kilometres from the Majá Robledo water-supply reservoir. This allows you to experience the landscape from several perspectives: from the high-altitude viewpoint to the winding river forms in the valley.

Hiking trails and excursions at different paces

The Majá Robledo route is eight kilometres long and begins in Casares de las Hurdes in the direction of Carabusino. The Ruta de los Olivares begins approximately 500 metres from Casares de las Hurdes, on the road towards Caminomorisco. The Ruta de los Lobos also begins in Casares de las Hurdes and leads towards the Majá Robledo reservoir. The different distances help you compare daily plans with shorter and longer activities.

The Ruta de los Olivares can be travelled by car or bicycle. It is considered passable and runs along forest tracks, paths, roads and firebreaks. The Ruta de los Lobos ends in El Gasco and is 17 kilometres long; it includes one section by car and the remaining route on foot. The hike to the Cueva de los Moros begins at the swimming pools of Casares de las Hurdes.

The Mirador de las Estrellas also adds to the excursion destinations. It is located next to the junction from the road to the track leading to Majá Robledo and is suitable for stargazing at night. For further orientation, the PR-CC 212 Senda de Alfonso XIII is connected to a hiking route from Casares de las Hurdes. Hurdana architecture and traces of the past

The Campanario de Casares de Las Hurdes is a striking example of traditional Hurdana architecture. It was built from stone and slate and stands separately from the church, which was built later. This gives the village view a distinctive architectural feature in which the material and construction form are immediately visible.

The Cementerio de piedra features rock-art motifs such as ladder shapes, stars, and radial and concentric circles. These rock-art motifs are characteristic of artistic phases of the advanced Iron Age and pre-Christian periods. In La Huetre, traditional narrow lanes preserve another architectural aspect of the region. Carabusino also preserves the Calleja de los Borrachos, an alley particularly representative of local vernacular architecture.

In Robledo, the old area of the Alquería and the terraced orchards are worth seeing. Together with the Centro de Interpretación de la Artesanía Hurdana, the Campanario and the rock-art motifs, they create a varied cultural programme that can be combined with days spent enjoying nature and hiking.
