Discover Valdelacasa de Tajo

Valdelacasa de Tajo combines sacred architecture, military history, distinctive landscapes and stages of the Camino Natural del Tajo. Those who explore the town will find details from several eras. The Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción in Valdelacasa de Tajo is a Gothic building from the 15th and 16th centuries, with a polygonal apse and an interior spanned by a rib vault. Its southern entrance is protected by a Renaissance portal with arches decorated with tree trunks.

Culture and history

The Via Crucis of Valdelacasa de Tajo was built in 1821 and financed through contributions from local residents. It is associated with Holy Week and the Feast of the Holy Cross on 3 May. The Castillo de Espejel in Valdelacasa de Tajo was built in the 10th century; the remains of the barbican and coracha have survived. Valdelacasa de Tajo's Neolithic cultural heritage includes the El Gambete dolmen. It lies at a crossroads or, more precisely, on the boundary between three towns in the region.

Landscape and trails

The Anticlinal de Valdelacasa extends across the provinces of Cáceres, Toledo and Ciudad Real. From Puente del Arzobispo, it can be reached via the EX-387 road by travelling south. Stage 29 of the Camino Natural del Tajo reaches Valdelacasa de Tajo after crossing fields with olive trees, almond trees and holm oaks. Stage 30 of the Camino Natural del Tajo begins in Valdelacasa de Tajo. From there, it passes through hunting grounds and agricultural fields. After crossing the road between Valdelacasa de Tajo and Peraleda de San Román, the route continues along an easy-to-walk track. The different route characteristics allow for comparison based on your own plans: fields and hunting grounds alongside an easy-to-walk track.

On Stage 29, wildfires in summer 2025 may have interrupted or made parts of the route impassable. Before visiting, you should therefore check the condition of the route before including the stage in your plans.

Traditions

El Remolino is one of Valdelacasa de Tajo's traditional popular festivals and takes place from 25 to 28 August. Its origins lie in an agricultural fair founded in 1906. The Petitorio de Ánimas is a religious tradition in Valdelacasa de Tajo that takes place on the night before 1 November. Several women walk through the streets with a basket and a bell, collecting alms for the deceased.
