Discover La Garganta: Mountain Nature, Trails and Culture

La Garganta is located on the foothills of the Sierra de Candelario at an altitude of more than 1,000 metres.

Landscape and Trails

A notable viewpoint is the Mirador de La Garganta. You can reach it via the CC-225 road; it is located 1.5 kilometres from La Garganta in the direction of Candelario, on the Cordel del Berrocal. There, a fully accessible facility covering 400 square metres is available. The viewpoint features a circular platform with a 360-degree view and a 60-metre-long adventure walkway. From the Mirador de La Garganta, at an altitude of 1,000 metres, you can enjoy views across the Valle del Ambroz.

The hiking trails also offer different landscape highlights. The PR-CC 37 Bosques del Ambroz begins in La Garganta and leads through chestnut and riverside forests, across cherry and plum terraces, as well as through the landscapes of the Extremadura dehesa. The SL-CC 97 El Nevero combines mountain nature and traditional engineering with panoramic views across the Valle del Ambroz at an altitude of more than 1,000 metres. The SL-CC 92 Camino de Arrieros ends at the Fuente Nueva in La Garganta; the route is 4.3 kilometres long, takes two hours, is considered easy and follows a linear course. The length, duration and route format make the trails easy to compare, while each landscape has a different focus.

Culture and History

The recently restored Corral de los Lobos is now a major tourist attraction and a valuable part of the area’s historical and cultural heritage. It was built using traditional dry-stone walling techniques without binding material; at the same time, transhumance played an important role in the livestock-farming tradition of La Garganta and the surrounding area.

Another testament to the area’s history is the Pozo de la Nieve, a cylindrical structure that served to supply and preserve ice throughout the year. Historically, La Garganta had four ice houses, one of which has survived to this day. The ice produced there was transported by rail to cities at the end of the 19th century.

The Ermita de San Gregorio is located in the area known as “El Castañar”. From there, you can enjoy views of the Sierra surrounding the Valle del Ambroz. The centuries-old Romería de los Paporros is also part of the regional tradition, a pilgrimage linking Béjar and La Garganta around the Virgin of Castañar and celebrated as a festive tradition since around the middle of the 15th century.

Nature Observation and Active Experiences

The El Lobo visitor centre houses a comprehensive exhibition about the behaviour and habitat of the wolf, the structure of wolf packs, different wolf species and the relationship between humans and wolves. The Vía Ferrata de La Garganta offers a different kind of activity: this guided vertical mountain experience includes rungs, monkey bridges, Tibetan bridges, zip lines and rappelling.

At the Mirador Celeste near the Corral de los Lobos, the “Más allá de las estrellas” experience offers guided stargazing with a laser pointer and telescopes. Constellations, deep-sky objects, planets, nebulae and the Moon can be observed. The hiking trail, exhibition, vertical mountain experience and stargazing therefore represent clearly different ways of experiencing the distinctive features of La Garganta.
