Holiday apartment in Abadía: Palacio de Sotofermoso and La Bien Parada

The Palacio de Sotofermoso and its gardens have been classified since 2022 as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the category of Historic Site.

Culture

In the 16th century, the Duke of Alba transformed the castle and the Sotos grounds of the Palacio de Sotofermoso into a manor house and had a garden laid out there. The grounds became a poetic centre where a literary academy was held and which was associated with Garcilaso de la Vega, Boscán and Lope de Vega.

The well-preserved Mudéjar courtyard of the Palacio de Sotofermoso includes a ground-floor gallery with horseshoe arches. Here, the architecture combines the name of the courtyard with a clearly recognisable structural element.

The La Bien Parada monastery is regarded as an outstanding Franciscan monastic building in Extremadura and dates from the 17th century. The monastery ruins preserve remains that reveal the elegant proportions of Austrian Baroque.

Abadía has a medieval bridge. The Santo Domingo church has massive stone walls, and its bell tower was built from large granite blocks.

Nature and trails

The natural swimming area in Abadía is located in the Ambroz riverbed. It has a large picnic area that is open to the public.

Visitors can use Abadía’s public trail network for cycling trips. At the same time, it provides access to agricultural plots within the municipality.

For planning purposes, culture, nature by the river and trail activities can be considered as separate focuses. You can give historical architecture and literature individual weight or combine the themes; no fixed order is prescribed. Several interests can be planned side by side: culture, water and exercise are separate themes.

For planning the content of your visit, the points of interest mentioned can be organised by type: the Palacio de Sotofermoso combines architectural history, gardens and literature; La Bien Parada represents a Franciscan monastic building with Baroque remains. The medieval bridge and Santo Domingo add further historic buildings in Abadía to this cultural focus. In contrast, the Ambroz, with its natural swimming area and public picnic area, represents a separate focus on nature and leisure. The trail network forms a third category because cycling trips and access to agricultural plots are mentioned there. This allows you to distinguish between concentrated cultural visits, time by the riverbed and exercise on public trails during your days, without combining these themes into a single itinerary.

When booking a holiday apartment in Abadía, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can be considered separately from your interests in the area. This keeps the comparison of accommodation details objective, while culture, the Ambroz river swimming area and the trail network remain independent themes for planning your days.
