Culture and History

The Iglesia Parroquial de la Purísima Concepción is a vernacular Baroque building whose construction began in the first third of the 17th century. Its floor plan has the shape of a Latin cross. The Casa Palacio de los Santa Cruz has a stone Renaissance portal framed by columns. The Rollo, also known as the Picota, is a 16th-century monument. The crowning feature of the Rollo, or Picota, bears two lions and the coats of arms of the Santa Cruz family; at the same time, this monument marks the historical independence of these territories from Trujillo.

The Puente sobre el río Magasca is a bridge with two ramps, two stone arches and masonry made of slate rubble. The present Ermita de la Virgen de Soterraña replaced an earlier building that had completely fallen into disrepair and houses Madroñera’s patron saint.
