Talaván: Cranes, Culture and History

Talaván begins at the water with a natural feature of particular importance: the sector’s most significant crane population is located around the Embalse de Talaván; the roosting sites are situated on the shores of the reservoir. Nature

There are two viewpoints at the Embalse de Talaván. One is located at the old bridge, while the other can be reached along the reservoir on foot or by car.

Culture

In the centre of Talaván, the Fuente la Breña lies along the route of the Vereda del Camino Real de Castilla. The Fuente la Breña dates from the 18th century, combining a central location in the town with a clearly dated historical classification.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built between the 15th and 16th centuries. The present Ermita de Nuestra Señora Virgen del Río is entirely a new building from 1971. The chapel contains an image of the Virgen del Río dating from the 16th century.

Las Candelas takes place on 2 February: The Purificás enter the church in regional dress and white mantillas, sing old verses, and present, among other offerings, a Rosca de piñonate. The date of the festival and the individual elements of the custom give this occasion a clearly recognisable cultural profile.

History

The Castro El Castillejo dates from the Late Bronze Age and shows evidence of the Chalcolithic period. The inhabitants of Castro El Castillejo disappeared with the arrival of the Roman Empire. This sequence places an early settlement history alongside its chronological turning point.

Water and Events

At the end of August, a canoe trip takes place on the Tagus, covering approximately 15 km from the bridge at Serradilla to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora Virgen del Río in Talaván. The approximate route length, starting point, and destination make the course of the water excursion comprehensible without specifying anything beyond the approximate distance.

The Romería de la Virgen del Río takes place at the local chapel at the end of April and includes, among other activities, traditional bullfights and clay pigeon shooting. This makes it possible to consider seasonal events, water activities, nature observation, and cultural sites separately.
