Cadalso: Waterfalls, Hiking Trails and Historic Sites

Cadalso combines a distinctive waterscape with trails through the Sierra de las Jañonas and historic architecture. Los Cachones is Cadalso’s natural swimming pool and is located on the river near Cadalso. Within the municipality, the Río Árrago forms waterfalls.

The landscape around Cadalso is characterised by olive trees, pines, oaks, vines, ferns, rockroses and heather. Water, wooded slopes and agriculturally shaped areas lie directly alongside one another. Within the municipality, different landscape impressions can be experienced without separating natural history from the history of the town.

Nature and Trails

The SL-CC 205 “La Sierrilla” hiking trail begins next to Cadalso’s bus stop and leads through the dense forests of the Sierra de las Jañonas. The GR 10 E-04 stage begins in Cadalso next to the Ermita del Cristo del Humilladero, which dates from the 16th century. The two starting points already connect the town area with different landscapes and historic points of reference.

On the eastern flank of the Sierra de las Jañonas, the trail gradually gains elevation, crosses the Arroyo de la Gargantilla and passes through a varied mixed forest with dense Mediterranean undergrowth. The first kilometre of the trail leads through olive groves bordered by old stone walls. A circular route leads through particularly beautiful mixed forests of coniferous and deciduous trees.

The different trail routes can be compared based on their starting points and landscapes. For planning your own day, the trails described offer different emphases in terms of route, terrain and vegetation. The choice can be guided by the desired combination of the town area, natural surroundings and historic points of reference, without requiring a uniform trail character.

Culture and Local History

The Iglesia de la Concepción in Cadalso is a fortress-like church built entirely of granite in the 15th and 16th centuries. The former prison of Cadalso bears the inscription “Real Cárcel año 1793”.

The Aula de Naturaleza de Cadalso is a nature and interpretation centre in Cadalso. Alongside the trails and waterfalls, this provides a place within the municipality that explicitly focuses on nature-related topics. Cadalso is also home to a 17th-century image of Christ that can be viewed.

The historical testimonies can be viewed according to their different emphases: the building, historic place of remembrance, religious image and nature interpretation each represent their own approach to local history. Cultural exploration therefore complements the landscape experiences with different ways of seeing and understanding.

Festivals and Local Traditions

San Ubaldo is celebrated in Cadalso on 16 May. The weekend of Constitution Day in Cadalso includes a traditional Extremaduran matanza. The two dates fall in different parts of the year and complement the natural and cultural sites with local traditions tied to specific times.
