Ruanes was granted the status of a villa in 1628 under Felipe IV. In the town center, stately homes have been preserved that retain traces of wealthy gentlemen; the cemetery is considered the most significant evidence of this former prosperity. Ruanes also preserves large traditional houses with broad façades, typical entrance portals, and quiet, well-maintained streets. Archaeological remains from Roman times can be found in Ruanes. The town is associated with the possible Roman settlement of Reuveanas, from which the name of the town is said to be derived.

Culture

The Iglesia Parroquial de La Asunción is a Gothic and Neo-Gothic church dating from the 15th and 20th centuries. A stone crucero on Calle Pizarro dates from the late 18th century. On the road to La Cumbre, there is a stone wayside cross set on two square stone steps, probably dating from the 17th century. Sacred art also includes the polychrome wooden carving of the Virgen de la Breva, a work from the first half of the 17th century.

Festivals

On May 9, Ruanes celebrates the feast of San Gregorio Ostiense. On this occasion, the population fulfills a vow that was confirmed at an open town meeting on May 4, 1749. The celebration includes a pilgrimage during which the image of the saint is carried in procession from the church to the Cruz de San Gregorio.

Los Ofertorios takes place on the second weekend of August and includes a verbena, children's games, and a traditional auction. At this auction, handicrafts, cured meats, eggs, pulses, liqueurs, and the traditional sweet rosca de piñonate are offered.

Nature

In the area surrounding Ruanes, the ZEPA Llanos de Trujillo is delimited, among other things, by the EX-381 between Trujillo and Ruanes and by the municipal connecting road between Ruanes and Ibahernando. There is pseudo-steppe landscape with open areas characterized by grasses, annual herbs, and pastureland, as well as areas with gorse, rush meadows, and holm oak formations. These open habitats serve as retreats for birds adapted to open habitats.

A route to San Gregorio runs at an altitude of around 630 m through a landscape where nature unfolds with hardly any human intervention. Next to the cemetery, there is a pond where freshwater turtles can be observed. From Trujillo, Ruanes can be reached via the EX-381 road; the distance is stated as 18 kilometers.

Cuisine

Traditional Ruanes cuisine includes air-dried hams from home slaughtering, roast lamb, and chanfainas. At the intersection with the roads to Salvatierra, La Cumbre, Santa Ana, and Botija, there is a restaurant serving traditional dishes.
