Cabezuela del Valle: Historic Centre, Water and Cherry Culture

Cabezuela del Valle is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the “Historic Ensemble” category.

Culture and History

The historic centre of Cabezuela del Valle features narrow streets and arcaded squares. Traditional buildings in the historic centre include timber framing, drying balconies, galleries with balustrades and projecting structural elements. Different architectural forms can be seen between the street space, the square and the buildings in the historic centre.

The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel was built on the site of a former synagogue. It houses a Baroque high altar and a sacristy with Talavera tiles. A cultural tour can consider the building structure, street space and interior furnishings alongside one another.

Several points of access therefore stand alongside one another in the historic area: the townscape with its streets and squares, the design of the traditional houses and the church’s furnishings. The former use of the church site is part of the history of the building, while the high altar and sacristy characterise its sacred interiors.

Water and Nature

La Pesquerona is a natural bathing area on the Río Jerte in Cabezuela del Valle. Access from Cabezuela del Valle is via Calle Molinillos.

The Centro de Interpretación del Agua is located in Cabezuela del Valle at Paraje de Peñas Albas, s/n. It comprises five thematic areas and an information module that presents various routes in detail.

The water theme brings together a named bathing area on the Río Jerte and a facility with five thematic areas. The two places therefore differ in their described function, without losing their connection to water.

Routes

The “Umbría de Cabezuela” mountain biking route begins at a bridge over the Río Jerte and passes through Cabezuela del Valle. On the return journey, it follows the Cordel del Valle to Cabezuela del Valle. The bridge, passage through the town and return via the Cordel del Valle give the route its clearly recognisable course.

The route complements the historical and water-related themes with a sporting perspective. This makes it possible to consider local history, water, the cycling route and exhibitions as distinct focal points when planning the day.

Cherry Culture

The Museo de la Cereza presents interactive elements, reconstructed environments and original objects in exhibition areas spread over three floors. At the Museo de la Cereza, visitors can learn about local cherry varieties, particularly the famous Picotas del Jerte. The Museo de la Cereza is housed in a typical valley building that is of historical and artistic value and has been well preserved.

Cherry culture is conveyed across several levels in the museum: the exhibition areas are distributed over three floors, while typical rooms, original objects and local varieties show different aspects of this theme. Visitors therefore gain insight both into its presentation and into the special Picotas del Jerte.
