Zarza de Montánchez – Nature, Culture and Regional Traditions

Zarza de Montánchez lies at the foot of the Sierra de Montánchez. The landscape around the town includes oak groves, olive terraces, vineyards and dehesas with holm oaks and cork oaks.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel combines Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. The church has 16th-century frescoes and a panel painting of the Virgin and Child, also from the 16th century.

Nature and Landscape

The Árbol Singular Encina La Terrona is part of Extremadura’s protection network for notable individual trees. This monumental holm oak stands on the Finca La Dehesa and is estimated to be 800 years old and more than 16 metres tall.

Route R5. Ruta Encina La Terrona begins in Zarza de Montánchez at Plaza de la Piscina Municipal. Near the edge of the town, it crosses the medieval stone Puente Pozo del Prado. To access the private property along this route, an iron gate must be opened and then closed again, as livestock may be present there. The starting point at the plaza and the crossing at the edge of the town mark two different orientation points along the same route.

Bridges, Water and Altitude

The Puente del Tamuja is a medieval bridge over the Tamuja River. Fishing is possible in the Tamuja Reservoir. Paragliding is practised from the Sierra de San Cristóbal.

Local Games

“Juego de Las Bolas” is a traditional game in Zarza de Montánchez. It is played on a sloping rectangular concrete court with high boundary walls and eight small steel balls. Chance and betting play a central role. In Zarza de Montánchez, the game is played from mid-September to early October.

Festivals and Regional Customs

The Fiesta del Pan y el Queso takes place in Zarza de Montánchez every year on 19 January. It includes the Tabúa tradition: crushed seeds of the cattail species Espadaña are thrown at one another in the streets of Zarza de Montánchez. Bread and cheese are distributed after a commemorative prayer at the church. The fiesta traces its origins to a battle between Muslims and Christians on the Iberian Peninsula around 1234.
