Santibáñez El Bajo – Dehesa, Trails and Local Traditions

Santibáñez el Bajo is surrounded by two streams and an extensive dehesa. Among the named landscapes is “La Madre del agua”, with oak forests, Roman remains and a granite rock into which rough steps have been carved to its summit.

Landscape and Trails

The easy, linear Ruta BTT 5 Dehesa de Ahigal is 30.04 km long and passes through Santibáñez el Bajo. After crossing Santibáñez el Bajo, it continues through the Dehesa Boyal, which is regarded as an example of sustainable management and as one of the best-preserved dehesas in the region. The “Eco-Birding en Trasierra-Tierras de Granadilla” experience begins with a guided walk and birdwatching in the dehesa of Santibáñez el Bajo. The Ruta de los Lagares follows the Arroyo de las Clavellinas and passes the remains of traditional buildings. The Camino de San Albín runs through olive groves and vineyards to the Laguna del Monte. A route through the western part of Trasierra-Tierras de Granadilla passes through Santibáñez el Bajo, among other places.

Churches and Historical Traces

The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol in Santibáñez el Bajo dates from the 15th century and is considered the municipality of Santibáñez el Bajo’s most outstanding monument. The Ermita del Santísimo Cristo de la Paz dates from the 18th century, preserves a wooden carving of Christ and houses an alabaster Madonna, a replica of which is located in Italy. Near “La Madre del agua” in Santibáñez el Bajo is the so-called “Sillón del Moro”, a worked granite rock with numerous cupules on its upper surface. Within the municipality of Santibáñez el Bajo is a site dedicated to San Albín, surrounded by Roman remains.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

Migas santibañejas are recommended as a speciality of Santibáñez el Bajo’s cuisine. The celebrations in honour of the Santísimo Cristo de la Paz take place on 23 September (“Día del Cristo”) and 24 September (“Cristo Viejo”) and include solemn processions, the Rito del Ramo and a traditional offertory. During Chiquitía on 1 November, young people receive gifts from their grandparents and godparents, then form groups and go to traditionally designated places for a shared snack. The traditional Romería on Easter Monday includes a procession through the Dehesa Boyal, an open-air Mass, traditional games, competitions, charangas and tamborileros. The Jota of Santibáñez el Bajo is danced on various occasions, including at the wedding Pasacalles.
