Discover Coria: History, River Landscape and Culture

Coria begins with a clear historical emphasis: Coria’s Casco Histórico has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Histórico category since 25 May 1993. The old town can be explored through its irregular medieval street network of lanes, squares and small plazas.

Culture and History

The Catedral de Santa María de la Asunción combines Gothic-Plateresque architecture with Baroque additions; construction work extended from the late 15th to the 18th century. The Castillo de los Duques de Alba is a Bien de Interés Cultural monument and preserves a military design from the late 15th century with an irregular pentagonal floor plan.

The Murallas Romanas feature 23 square towers and enclose a total perimeter of 1,065 metres. The Puente de Piedra is an example of civil Renaissance architecture. Its riverbed has been dry since 1590, after the Río Alagón naturally changed course as a result of a severe flood.

The archaeological section of the Museo de la Cárcel Real covers Coria’s history from prehistory to the Middle Ages through its exhibits.

River, Nature and Trails

The Jardín Botánico de Coria covers 1.5 hectares and houses a representative collection of Mediterranean woodland flora. The Parque Fluvial del Tamujal is a natural area for walking, leisure and relaxation on the right bank of the Río Alagón, where it flows through Coria.

The Paseo Fluvial de la Isla combines riparian woodland with water sports and outdoor activities in its surroundings. The Paseo del Camino Real follows a historic section of the Vía Dalmacia and connects Coria’s old town via the Puente de Piedra with the Paseo Fluvial de la Isla on the Río Alagón.

The Ruta de la Vía Dalmacia is a linear out-and-back route with a length of 5.5 km. The Descenso del Río Alagón is a non-competitive canoeing activity that ends at the Puente de Hierro de Coria and covers a 18.8 km route. Different route lengths and types of activities can be weighed against one another for personal travel planning.

Coria is considered a particularly suitable place for birdwatching in a natural setting. The Santuario de la Virgen de Argeme stands outside Coria in the natural landscape of the former Dehesa de Malpartida, near the escarpment formed by the Río Alagón.

Events and Experiences

The Paseo Guiado A Través de los Siglos presents Coria’s history on a journey through time from prehistory via antiquity, the Middle Ages and the modern era to the present day. FITCORIA is an international Feria del Toro, a tourism, cultural and socioeconomic bull fair held in Coria in mid-March.

Coria Sabor Micológico is a tapas route held in November, featuring mushroom dishes at local restaurants. The Fiestas de San Juan take place in Coria every year from 23 to 29 June.
