Villamiel: Churches, Forest Landscape and GR 10 in the Sierra de Gata

Culture

The townscape features two religious buildings from the 16th century: La Magdalena Church and the Ermita de la Piedad. La Magdalena has a Baroque high altar retable and a carved figure of Saint Peter Celestine. The Palacio del Deán dates from the 17th century. Popular sayings about human life and death can still be read on the walls of La Magdalena Church.

Trevejo also offers distinctive historical points of reference. The Church of San Juan Bautista in Trevejo dates from the 16th century, while the origins of Trevejo Castle go back to the Muslim period. Around the church in Trevejo are about a dozen anthropomorphic graves carved into the granite. The combination of churches, castle and graves makes different historical layers perceptible without equating the individual remains.

Villamiel's cultural heritage includes the traditional game of Choqui, which has been preserved by women in the town. In Choqui, a larger ball strikes a smaller ball.
