Torremocha: Cultural Heritage, ZEPA and Holiday Apartments

Torremocha is part of a ZEPA protected by a European directive, encompassing a pseudo-steppe plain with scrubland. The ZEPA Llanos de Cáceres y Sierra de Fuentes is known worldwide for steppe birds such as the great bustard, sandgrouse and stone-curlew.

History

Cruz del Puente Grande is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). Puente Grande in Torremocha is comprehensively protected as a heritage site. Remains of a 16th-century palace have been preserved in the centre of Torremocha.

A 16th-century house in Torremocha preserves a coat of arms of the Order of Santiago and original interior remains; today it has been extensively remodelled and is used as a residence. The combination of the preserved coat of arms, original interior remains and current residential use also makes the building's different historical layers visible.

The Feria de Ganados takes place in Torremocha on 23 May. The patron-saint festivities of Cristo del Humilladero take place in Torremocha from 14 to 17 September. The Romería de La Pica takes place on the Tuesday after Easter. The different dates make it possible to compare travel periods around cultural events. The dates are distributed across a fixed day in May, several days in September and a movable date in the Easter calendar.

Another tradition is the game of La Pica: in Torremocha, it is played by young men and women using hard-boiled eggs.
