The Parque de Los Miliarios is classified as an archaeological site of the Roman road and is located in the municipality of Carcaboso in the province of Cáceres. Several milestones brought from the Vía de la Plata to Carcaboso are located there; they marked the miles of the Roman road.
Culture
The Parque de los Miliarios is located next to the Parroquia de Santiago Apóstol. Two milestone columns from the reigns of the emperors Trajan (98–117) and Hadrian (117–138) stand beside the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol. The parish church of Santiago Apóstol preserves several milestones in its entrance portico. The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol dates from the 16th century; the church of Carcaboso had a rectangular structure.
The Centro de Interpretación Los Miliarios includes a small ethnographic exhibition with objects lent by residents of Carcaboso. The centre is dedicated to the Roman road and the Way of St. James along the Vía de la Plata. It provides all the information necessary for completing the pilgrimage route.
Pilgrimage tradition
The section of the Camino de Santiago Vía de la Plata in Extremadura is divided into five stages for cyclists. This division offers a separate perspective alongside Carcaboso’s archaeological and ecclesiastical sites.
Festivals and customs
The Cruz de Mayo festival is celebrated every year on the first Sunday in May. The convivencia for Cruz de Mayo takes place in a picnic area on the right bank of the Jerte, where the river flows through Carcaboso. During the procession, a branch decorated with Roscas is the centre of attention, and the offerings are auctioned after Mass.
As part of the local Tirar la Malla tradition, young women throw a flower-decorated jug into the river. The bridal couples must then break the jug with stones. The fixed festival date and the cycling route divided into stages provide different time-based options for travel planning.

A holiday apartment in Carcaboso can be selected based on travel dates, room category and cancellation policy. These details form a separate practical framework alongside the attractions of the town: Roman milestones, the Church of Santiago, the Way of St. James and the festival customs represent different focal points. Depending on their preferred daily rhythm, travellers can consider these topics separately without combining them into a single excursion programme. Travel dates make the timeframe of one’s own planning visible; the room category describes which type of accommodation is being considered. The cancellation policy stands alongside these as separate information. These three details can be read independently of the town’s attractions and thus form an objective basis for comparing accommodation options.
