Caminomorisco – Nature, Trails and Culture in Las Hurdes

The El Melero meander is located near Riomalo de Abajo, in the municipality of Caminomorisco. It combines hiking opportunities, a viewpoint overlooking the landscape along the Alagón River, and a natural pool on the Ladrillar River.

Nature

The Mirador del Chorrerón del Tajo, also known as Salto del Alavea, is located in the municipality of Caminomorisco and offers views of the waterfall on the Alavea River.

An insect hotel near Caminomorisco aims to raise awareness of bee mortality and the ecological importance of insects. Near Fuente la Teja, there is a natural swimming spot called El Hoyón.

Caminomorisco also has a natural swimming pool. The Centro de interpretación del Agua y Medio ambiente de las Hurdes is located in the Alquería de Cambrón in Caminomorisco, is housed in a former olive mill, and focuses particularly on the biodiversity of the region.

Trails and orientation

The Ruta Chorrerón del Tajo is a circular hiking trail starting at the Caminomorisco tourist information office. It follows the white-and-green markings of local trails along tracks and firebreaks.

The Ruta Pisá de la Mora is also a circular hiking trail. It begins at the Caminomorisco tourist information office and returns to Caminomorisco.

The Ruta Hotel de insectos starts at the Caminomorisco tourist information office and leads back to the town via firebreaks.

The Caminomorisco tourist information office is located next to the EX-204 regional road in the Casa de Cultura building and provides information about the Las Hurdes region.

Caminomorisco can be reached via the EX-204 road; the road passes through the town and provides connections towards Coria and Salamanca. Arrobuey can only be reached by off-road vehicle or on foot.

Culture

The Piedra Mora petroglyph consists of a depiction of footprints with weapons, including spearheads and a dagger. It dates from between the Iron Age and the Middle Ages.

From the EX-204, the petroglyph can be reached before arriving in Caminomorisco from the direction of Pinofranqueado: a track leading from the fire station to the Aceña leads to the engravings, which are located about 600 metres away near the former tree nursery site.

The Casa de Cultura de Caminomorisco uses stone and slate and is based on traditional Hurdana vernacular architecture.

The bridge at Cambrón was built in the 13th century to enable people and livestock to cross during floods. It was built from stone and slate according to the principles of traditional Hurdana architecture.

The XI. Matanza Tradicional de Caminomorisco 2025 featured a craft market and a staged traditional slaughter involving singeing and butchering the pig.

The Carnaval Hurdano is considered a defining feature of the identity of the inhabitants of the Las Hurdes region and has been celebrated every year for 20 years in a different Alquería of Las Hurdes.
