Berzocana: Discover Rock Paintings, a Church and Nature

Nature and Trails

Around two kilometres from Berzocana, the Ruta a las pinturas rupestres de Berzocana begins on the CC-22.4 road between Solana and Berzocana. It leads to three rock shelters with rock paintings at the Canchos de las Sábanas. The group of rock paintings in the municipality includes the rock shelters visited on the route as well as Risquillo de Paulino. The depictions date from the Copper Age to the Bronze Age and are dated to between 4000 and 1000 BC.

The Ruta a las pinturas rupestres de Berzocana is a short but challenging trail with pronounced inclines and sections over loose stone. Its first section follows a well-preserved farm track through mixed woodland of Pyrenean oaks (Quercus pyrenaica), cork oaks (Quercus suber) and chestnut trees (Castanea sativa). The information on inclines, ground conditions and trail character will help you assess the route in advance.

The Parque Sierra de Berzocana is a Zona de Especial Protección de Aves and a geosite within the Geopark. Its network of trails includes up to five recommended routes. Since 2004, the Roble de la Nava has been listed among Extremadura’s outstanding trees.

The Ruta a las Cuevas begins in the Plaza de Berzocana. By car, it can be reached via the road to Solana and a signposted track to the Casa Rural Finca de la Sierra.

Culture and History

At the Centro de Interpretación de la Arqueología del Geoparque, the exhibition displays a replica of the gold torques, grave goods and a reconstructed cave with a video about rock paintings. Archaeological remains from all historical periods can also be seen there.

The Church of San Juan Bautista is a Gothic religious building constructed in the 15th and 16th centuries; its main façade is characterised by a Mudéjar tower. The Capilla de los Santos houses the relics of San Fulgencio and Santa Florentina. In 1977, the church was declared a national historic monument of national interest.
