Church and Visual Arts

The parish of San Pedro already existed in 1257. A general chapter of the Order of Alcántara was held in San Pedro Church in 1410. The high altar was created by Pedro de Paz between 1550 and 1560; the paintings on the high altar were created by Pedro de Córdoba between 1605 and 1609.

Hermitages and Sierra

The Ermita del Humilladero houses an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece. It also contains a sculpture of the Crucified Christ created by Pedro de Paz in 1593. The murals in the hermitage depict the Last Supper and date approximately from the late 16th century.

The Ermita de San Blas stands high in the Sierra, surrounded by chestnut trees, and offers extensive views due to its elevated location. The pilgrimage to San Blas takes place on the second Sunday in August; participants make their way up into the Sierra on foot or on horseback.

Traces in the Town

The Torre de la Almenara is a pentagonal tower made of stone and lime. The historic town of Villa Gata has been designated an Asset of Cultural Interest of special cultural significance. The Fuente del Chorro bears the coat of arms of Charles I.

Festivals and River

In Gata, the feast of Santiago Apóstol is celebrated every year on 25 July. The festival includes a garlic market in Gata’s main square; a tasting of Vino de Pitarra is also on the programme.

The Río San Blas has a natural bathing area with clean river water. This bathing area includes toilets, restaurants and parking spaces.
