Culture and History

Jaraíz de la Vera’s Plaza Mayor has a striking two-storey layout, fully lined with arcades and featuring Renaissance stone columns. The Casa-Palacio del Obispo Manzano on the Plaza Mayor is now home to the Museo del Pimentón.

The Iglesia de Santa Maria de Gracia is a 15th-century church that has been designated a historic-artistic monument. It has an Early Gothic portal and a Baroque Churrigueresque altarpiece.

The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel dates from the late 15th century. It has a Baroque-Rococo main altarpiece with Churrigueresque influences, created in the mid-18th century.

The Lamoina I Dolmen is a Chalcolithic megalithic monument of the chamber-and-passage type; its grave goods are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Cáceres.

Festivals and Pimentón

In February, Jaraíz de la Vera holds carnival celebrations with costumed groups, floats and comparsas; there is also the traditional Burial of the Sardine. The Fiestas del Tabaco y el Pimiento take place from 10 to 15 August and include a competition for the best tobacco and the best pepper in front of the town hall.

The Festividad de la Virgen del Salobrar is celebrated on the first Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, the second Easter Sunday and Lunes de Piedra. On the second Easter Sunday, processions take place, followed in the afternoon on the Plaza Mayor by the special Ofertorio of the faithful.

The Museo de Identidad del Pimentón de la Vera showcases local pepper varieties and their development, as well as the history and development of traditional work tools, equipment, milling, field management and the rural economy.
