Part of the ZEPA Llanos de Cáceres y Sierra de Fuentes extends across the municipal area of Torreorgaz.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Pedro has a rectangular apse with a Gothic ribbed vault, dating from the first half of the 16th century. The same church also includes a single-nave Baroque body from the 17th century and an unpainted Rococo altarpiece.

The Ermita del Calvario is an example of vernacular Baroque architecture from the 18th century and stands on a granite hill. La Torre del Cachorro is a 13th-century defensive structure and gives Torreorgaz its name. The Castillo del Cachorro has a fully preserved three-storey tower with attached defensive walls.

The Fuente de la Higuera is a Roman spring whose water flows out from beneath large granite rocks. There is a Latin inscription at the spring. The Puente Romano is located at the upper end of the Embalse del Salor.

Nature and Trails

The Río Salor catchment crosses part of the municipality of Torreorgaz, while the end of the Embalse del Salor lies in Torreorgaz. The town is surrounded by dehesa landscapes and has numerous wetlands.

The Embalse del Salor and its surroundings are considered an area of national importance for wintering waterbirds and form part of the ZEPA Llanos de Cáceres y Sierra de Fuentes. The Ruta de la Colá starts at the cemetery of Torreorgaz and leads through pastureland with numerous steppe birds.

The Ruta del Embalse del Salor follows the local road from Torreorgaz to Valdesalor and is considered a three-hour hike offering opportunities to observe water species. For planning your own day, the two routes offer different observation themes: pastureland and steppe birds on the Ruta de la Colá, and water species on the Ruta del Embalse del Salor.

Festivals and Everyday Culture

The Romería de San Isidro takes place on 15 May next to a hermitage on the Río Salor. It includes a decorated float competition, a mass, a verbena and competitions for all age groups.

As part of the tradition of Los Quintos and the Tuero, one of the largest holm oaks from the dehesa is brought to the village square and burned in a large fire on Christmas Eve.

The San Blas celebrations in Torreorgaz include a musical offering procession in which women carry boards loaded with baked goods on their heads. During the San Blasino custom, faces are blackened with burnt cork.

The Museo Etnográfico presents typical ways of life as they were practiced several decades ago in the towns of the comarca.

Regional Cuisine

Prueba de cerdo is a preparation from the traditional home slaughter of pigs, in which seasoned pork is tasted before chorizos are made. Torreorgaz is also one of the 19 municipalities on the Ruta del Jamón de Montánchez.
