Sierra de Fuentes: Risco, Nature and Culture

The Risco is an elevation that stands out as a residual relief feature in the extensive erosion surface of Llanos de Cáceres and Sierra de Fuentes. Here, the landscape appears as a clearly defined relationship between relief and erosion surface.

Nature

The Centro Recuperación de Fauna y Educación Ambiental Los Hornos is a nature interpretation centre in Sierra de Fuentes. Environmental education is offered there. The centre currently receives visitors only by prior appointment; anyone planning a visit can factor this appointment in as a fixed part of their schedule.

At the Centro Recuperación de Fauna y Educación Ambiental Los Hornos, injured wild animals are treated and cared for during their recovery. Research is also conducted there, which can contribute to the conservation of endangered species. Environmental education, the care of injured animals and research therefore form the different tasks that come together at this site.

The natural features of Sierra de Fuentes thus range from the visible relief of the Risco to the work of the nature interpretation centre. The landscape setting, environmental education, animal care and research can be viewed as separate thematic areas. The prior appointment at Los Hornos represents a specific scheduling requirement, while the Risco is described as a geographical reference point in the landscape.

Culture and Open Spaces

The Ermita del Risco is an 18th-century religious building in Sierra de Fuentes. Its classification connects the place name with a clearly dated building and adds a cultural reference to the landscape description.

In the surroundings of Sierra de Fuentes are the Museo De Cáceres, a museum; the Palacio De Los Golfines De Abajo, a palace; the Palace of the Storks, a palace; and the Palacio De Carvajal, a palace. The area therefore brings together a museum and several palaces as distinct types of places.

Also in the surroundings of Sierra de Fuentes are the Paseo de Cánovas, a park, and Mastropiero Gastrobar y Jardín, a garden. Together with the museum, palaces and religious building, they provide a selection of various named places that can be considered separately according to their respective classifications.

Routes and Tradition

The Camino de los Descubridores connects Cáceres and Guadalupe via Sierra de Fuentes. The town is thereby included in a named connection between these two cities.

“El Corro” is a traditional wedding song sung by the groom’s family at the bride’s door when they came to collect her on the wedding night. The tradition thus identifies the song, the family involved, the place where it was sung and the occasion within the wedding custom.
