Belvís de Monroy: Fortress Residence, Lesser Kestrels and Hiking Trails

Belvís de Monroy combines the Castillo de Belvís de Monroy, a 13th-century fortress residence, with a location on a granite ridge between the Arañuelo plain, or the Tajo-Tiétar depression, and Las Villuercas. The Castillo combines military and palatial architecture; the complex includes a Renaissance palace. The town is very close to the A-5 motorway.

Culture and History

The Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago Apóstol is a local heritage site dating from the 14th to the 15th century. The Convento de San Francisco del Berrocal was built from 1505 onwards. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Berrocal is a 15th-century building that was remodelled several times up to the 18th century.

At the Centro de Interpretación Histórico y Cultural del Campo Arañuelo, panels present a chronological overview of the history of the Comarca Campo Arañuelo. The centre also displays models made by the local craftsman Joaquín García Molina that reconstruct monuments in Belvís de Monroy, including the Convento de San Francisco and the Castillo. Guided visits to the Centro de Interpretación Histórico y Cultural del Campo Arañuelo can be arranged.

The Nuestra Señora del Berrocal festival is celebrated on Trinity Sunday. The Virgen del Rosario festival is celebrated on the first Sunday in August. In Belvís de Monroy, the Passion of Christ is associated with Good Friday.

Nature and Trails

The ZEPA Colonias de Cernícalo Primilla de Belvís de Monroy is located within the town of Belvís de Monroy. Large concentrations of Lesser Kestrels gather there, particularly during the breeding season.

The Senda de los Frailes begins and ends next to the former Convento de Santa Ana, which is also called Henera de Santa Ana. It passes through varied landscapes with Mediterranean woodland and open areas and offers panoramic views of the Embalse de Valdecañas and Las Villuercas. The different landscape and trail themes can be considered separately and incorporated into your own planning.

Route R24 has no special signage; an app can be used to follow the hiking trail. Trail planning therefore involves different features side by side: the Senda de los Frailes is described in terms of its landscapes and panoramic views, while with R24, app-based navigation is explicitly part of the route. This makes it possible to distinguish both trail themes based on their specifically stated characteristics.
