Monroy: Castle, Roman Villa and Dehesa Boyal

Monroy reveals its historical character in several places: Monroy Castle is protected as a Monument of Cultural Interest and probably originated as a fortified house founded at the beginning of the 14th century. To visit Monroy Castle, you must contact the Monroy Tourist Office in advance.

Culture and History

The Church of Santa Catalina is a single-nave building constructed at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century. Its altarpiece was made in the 17th century and installed in Monroy in 1623.

Casa del Reloj houses Monroy’s Museum of Byzantine Iconography. Byzantine icons by Paquita Morgado and a collection of sundials by Gervasio Reolid are displayed there.

The Chapel of Santa Ana was built in the 19th century and is the center of the celebrations on Lunes de Albillo. Beside it are late Roman rock-cut tombs from the 4th and 5th centuries AD.

Las Purificás includes medieval coplas sung to the accompaniment of an Arabic pandereta. The Lunes de Albillo program includes a ring competition on horseback and horse races.

Roman Villa and Routes

The Roman Villa archaeological site lies about 3 km from the center of Monroy, in the area known as „Los Mochuelos del Tesoro“, and is divided into two areas. The southern area contains living quarters, baths, workshops and service areas.

La Villa Romana is an easy circular route in Monroy that can be completed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The route is 8.180 km long and takes about an hour and a half on foot.

It runs through Dehesa Boyal de Monroy, a dehesa characterized by holm oaks and grazed by sheep and cattle. At the end of each of these routes there are two birdwatching posts.
