Perales del Puerto – Nature, Culture and Starry Skies

Perales del Puerto is the starting point for the PR-CC 183 Cañada Real route, which passes through mid-mountain landscapes with woodland areas and the olive groves typical of the area.

Nature

The route begins in Perales del Puerto at the edge of the village on the road towards Cilleros, next to the Pilón there. The natural swimming area of Ribera de Acebo can be reached via the road to Ciudad Rodrigo and is located 1 km from the village. This places walking, time by the water and a clearly defined view of the night sky alongside one another as distinct interests. MC Perales del Puerto is a sky-observation point and astronomical observation site in the municipality of Perales del Puerto. At night, MC Perales del Puerto displays an illuminated star map for two hours, from 22:00 to 00:00. The period from summer to autumn is recommended for observation at MC Perales del Puerto. The transition between the recommended period and the specified evening window thereby creates different time-related focal points for planning.

Culture and Festivals

Perales del Puerto lies on the Cañada Real. This was a meeting place for shepherds and transhumance shepherds. Typical Sierra houses stand on Calle Cañada, while the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates from the 16th century. At the “Ara dedicada a Júpiter”, the first two lines are dedicated to Iuppiter Optimus Maximus.

The cultural sites thus bring together various historical points of reference: the former use of the Cañada Real, the architectural forms of the Sierra, the 16th-century church and the dedication to Jupiter. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Peña stands on a small hill where the municipal boundaries of Perales del Puerto, Hoyos and Cilleros meet. Perales del Puerto is also home to the remains of the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña. Near the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Peña there is a pulpit carved from granite. “Cuarzo Rosa” is also associated with Perales del Puerto.

The celebration of “Virgen de la Peña” takes place on the second Monday after Easter Sunday. The Fiesta del Emigrante is held on the first weekend in August. San Andrés is celebrated on 30 November. The three dates fall at different points in the calendar year and, alongside the cultural sites in the village and the surrounding area, create their own distinct seasonal focus. This allows historical evidence, townscapes and feast days to be perceived as separate cultural themes, without mixing up their respective names, locations or dates.
