Discover Plasenzuela: Nature, Archaeology and Culture

In El Bosque de To, Plasenzuela combines art and nature with the myths and legends of Extremadura. The village lies in a flat landscape on granite-rich terrain, from which several hills rise.

Nature and Trails

El Bosque de To is located on the CC-27.3 at kilometre 1.5 in Plasenzuela. A self-guided visit includes an illustrated map with explanations of the legends and lasts one to two hours. Guided visits follow paths where legends from Extremaduran mythology are told. The natural paths include inclines, boulders and uneven sections; the area is not accessible to wheelchair users. The landscape includes holm oak forests, Mediterranean nature and historic landscapes. Excursions are offered for schools, secondary schools and organised groups, while guided visits are also suitable for families.

Culture and Archaeology

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built in the 15th century and remodelled in the 17th century. The Museo Plasenzuela is housed in the former Cámara Agraria of Plasenzuela. Its permanent exhibition features information panels on the ethnography and history of the village. The museum displays the mechanism of the old town hall clock from the early 20th century, as well as traditional agricultural equipment and tools donated by residents of Plasenzuela.

The cremation necropolises of El Romazal I and El Romazal II are located within the municipality of Plasenzuela. El Romazal II is dated to the 3rd century BC, while El Romazal I dates from the end of the 2nd or the beginning of the 1st century BC. Various archaeological remains can be found on the Cerro de la Horca in Plasenzuela. The permanent exhibition covers the village’s earliest inhabitants and the Cerro de la Horca archaeological site; it includes archaeological pottery remains from the Late Neolithic period (5th millennium BC) and the Romanisation period, and extends into the modern era. The excavated necropolises of El Romazal provide insight into the religious beliefs, social organisation and Celtic influences affecting the protohistoric inhabitants of the hillfort.

The Museo Plasenzuela also hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures, poetry and art events, workshops, as well as tourist and cultural activities.

Festivals and Getting There

The Cruz de Mayo pilgrimage is celebrated on the first Sunday. The patron saint festivities for the Assumption of Mary in Plasenzuela take place from 15 to 17 August. From Cáceres, take the A-58 towards Trujillo to exit 21, then continue on the CC-333 towards Plasenzuela. From Trujillo, take the A-58 towards Cáceres to exit 21, then continue on the CC-333 towards Plasenzuela.
