Nature and Trails

The Molino de la Hoyuela Route begins in the dehesa surrounding Torrejón el Rubio, among holm oaks and retama, and leads to the Arroyo de la Casa, where oleanders and tamujos can be seen. The route crosses the Arroyo de la Casa twice: first beside the mill via a stone crossing that may be flooded after rain, and then over a beautiful 19th-century bridge.

The 17.8-kilometre Bucle Camino de las Transhumancia circular route starts in Torrejón el Rubio and climbs gently through dehesas with cork oaks and holm oaks to the Embalse de la Vid and its dam, also known as Presa de los Arias, before returning to Torrejón el Rubio. The circular route crosses the Arroyo de la Casa and returns to Torrejón el Rubio via Avenida de San Pedro de Alcántara.

A 39-kilometre route, including the ascent to Castillo de Monfragüe, is designed for travel by motorised vehicle or bicycle and includes nine stops with interpretive signage. The first marker for the route described is located next to the Torrejón el Rubio tourist office. One route connects Villarreal de San Carlos and Torrejón el Rubio via the livestock trail running between them, while the BTT Riberos del Almonte route passes through the centre of Torrejón el Rubio and leaves the town via Calle Florinda la Cava.

A permit is required for the Ruta morada and must be carried throughout the entire route, as it passes through a restricted zone.

Culture and History

Construction of the Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel began in the second half of the 15th century. The church is closely associated with the Carvajal family and served as the pantheon of this prominent noble family.

Castillo de Monfragüe is considered the best-known and most visited monument in Parque de Monfragüe. The Centro de Interpretación del Arte Rupestre can be visited via the Monfragüe Birdcenter or by prior appointment.

Las Escuelas de la Rata served as an educational centre until the 1970s; today, the building houses the town’s cultural centre.

Las Candelas and San Blas are the most traditional festivals of Torrejón el Rubio. On Easter Monday, the Romería de la Virgen del Monfragüe takes place as part of Torrejón el Rubio’s traditional festival calendar.
