Valdencín is a stop on the Valle del Alagón Pueblos de Luz route. At the same time, the town is part of the “Pueblos de Luz” tourism offering, which conveys the history, cultural heritage, surroundings and typical products of the colonization villages in Extremadura. A suggested Pueblos de Luz route takes a detour to Valdencín to see two murals. In the Valle del Alagón, seven tourist routes were created as part of the initiative according to geographical criteria; alongside cultural heritage, they also take natural, landscape and cultural resources into account.

Culture and Townscape

Valdencín was planned in 1964. The town was founded by the former Instituto Nacional de Colonización between 1965 and 1970. Its urban structure is laid out around a square. The church of Valdencín dates from the 20th century. The Iglesia de Santa Teresa has a rectangular floor plan with a single nave and is characterized by its bell tower.

The mural “Muro Crítico” has been displayed on the façade of the town hall since 2021. The Madrid-based artist Digo Diego created it as part of the “Muro crítico” urban art campaign of the Diputación de Cáceres. A second mural on the base of the church tower commemorates the work of the first female settlers; it was created by the artist Jonathan Carranza “Sojo”.

Landscape and Routes

In the Valle del Alagón, Valdencín is one of the whitewashed colonization settlements that stand out against a green setting. The town is a short distance from the main canal on the left bank of the Alagón River. The combination of routes, cultural heritage and landscape makes the various thematic approaches within the Valle del Alagón visible.
