Casas de Miravete: Nature, Trails and History

Casas de Miravete is located near the southeastern boundary of Monfragüe National Park and on the slope of the Sierra de Miravete of the same name. The landscape, with cork oaks, holm oaks and Mediterranean scrubland, gives the village a strong connection to nature. For planning your days, the trails and sights can be compared by activity, theme and route length.

The GeoCentro Monfragüe serves as a tourist information centre with maps and visitor information. Its permanent exhibition is dedicated to Monfragüe, its geological formation, rocks, minerals, flora and fauna. For registered groups, the GeoCentro organises rock art workshops using natural pigments.

Cycling

Casas de Miravete lies on two mountain biking routes in the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve cycling network: routes 7 and 8. A circular route from Casas de Miravete to Puerto de Miravete follows 1.5 km of the Cañada Real Leonesa Occidental on the return leg. La Raña is a 28.4 km out-and-back cycling route starting in Casas de Miravete. It runs along the Cañada Real del Puerto de Miravete to the village of Las Ventas, a geological enclave and a strategic crossroads of historic routes.

Hiking

The PR-CC 64 La Piñuela hiking trail begins opposite the GeoCentro Monfragüe in Casas de Miravete and is an 11.4 km circular route. It passes through Era de los Santos, which has been developed as an interpreted stargazing site. A well-signposted trail leads from Casas de Miravete to the summit of Pico Miravete; on foot, the route takes about an hour and a half and is approximately 4 km long. From Pico Miravete, you can see the Sierra de Gredos to the north and Monfragüe National Park to the west.

History

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is one of the places you can visit in Casas de Miravete. You can also visit the remains of Castillo de Miravete in the village. Fuerte Colbert was part of the French defence system used to secure the crossing over the Sierra de Miravete; today, the site lies in ruins and offers excellent views of the surrounding area from its location. Nature observation

The route from Casas de Miravete to the Pantano de Zamarro passes stone livestock shelters and centuries-old cork oaks, goes by picnic areas and offers a viewpoint overlooking the Pantano de Zamarro. The Ruta del Buitre Negro offers opportunities to observe griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, cinereous vultures, booted eagles, short-toed snake eagles and golden eagles.
