Torremenga: Circular Route, Dehesa Boyal and Village Culture

Nature and Trails

Torremenga can be explored via a named hiking trail, distinctive landscape features, and specific local details. The Ruta los Cotos-Dehesa Boyal is a 6.5-kilometre circular route with a low level of difficulty. Its starting point is at Plaza de España in Torremenga. It is designated as the local hiking trail SL-CC 52.

Along its route, the trail passes through Las Tejoneras, where the spring of the same name has nine pools. Las Tejoneras was formerly an area used for threshing. The Dehesa Boyal de Torremenga is home to centuries-old oak trees. The Ruta los Cotos-Dehesa Boyal reaches the Embalse del Robledo, where the birdlife living there can be observed. The route also continues to Torremenga’s public swimming pool. The combination of its circular layout, length, and low level of difficulty describes the trail, as does the sequence of the spring, oak woodland, reservoir, and swimming pool.

For a clearer understanding of the landscape, the various features remain distinct: Las Tejoneras refers to the area’s former use, the Dehesa Boyal to its old oak woodland, and the Embalse del Robledo to the birdlife living there. This makes it possible to consider the route and individual landscape features independently of one another.

Culture and Village Character

The village centre also offers named details with a history of their own. Plaza de España is partly lined with arcades. The square features a pilón typical of the area. The Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago was built between the 16th and 17th centuries and is dedicated to Santiago Apóstol. On the outskirts of Torremenga stands the Torre Menguada, which is widely regarded as a Visigothic tower. The name Torremenga appears to be derived from “Torre Menguada”.

Torremenga is connected to Jaraíz by an approximately two-kilometre-long paved promenade. Architecture, the history of the name, and local customs offer different cultural perspectives. This places the arcaded square, the Santiago church, the pilón, and the Torre Menguada alongside one another within a compact thematic setting, without their respective historical references becoming conflated.

Festivals and Performances

On 25 July, Torremenga celebrates the feast of its patron saint, Santiago Apóstol. During “Judas”, local residents perform a religious mystery play (auto sacramental) featuring a trial against Judas. During “Judas”, Judas is burned at the stake in the village square, followed by a large fireworks display. Buildings, the history of the name, and the festival events identified by date thus open up different cultural perspectives on the village.
