Fresnedoso de Ibor lies in a small valley formed by the Ibor River and the Fresnedoso and Torneros streams. The Contacto Metamórfico de Fresnedoso geosite supports geological education and illustrates contact metamorphism at granite batholiths.

Nature and geology

The Contacto Metamórfico de Fresnedoso geosite can be reached from the EX-118 via the local CC-79 road towards Fresnedoso de Ibor. At kilometre 2.2 lies the contact zone between plutonic rocks, including the granites of Bohonal de Ibor, and metamorphic schist rocks.

At the entrance to an abandoned section of road, visitors can park their car and observe the rocks along this section. For planning purposes, the access route, kilometre point and observation section can be considered separately.

The surroundings of Fresnedoso de Ibor include rugged mountain ranges such as the Sierras de Torneros, Gallega and Pimpollar. The native vegetation includes Mediterranean woodland with holm oaks and cork oaks, as well as shrubs such as rockroses and broom.

Cycling route and orientation

The 32-kilometre, physically demanding circular cycling route “Por los Ibores” begins in Castañar de Ibor, passes through the abandoned settlement of La Avellaneda to Fresnedoso de Ibor, and returns via the Collado de Aguas Frías. In Fresnedoso de Ibor, the route reaches the town and leaves it via Calle Benito Pérez Galdós in a south-easterly direction.

The “Por los Ibores” route is not signposted; for orientation, downloading the GPX file or using navigation with Outdooractive is recommended. For personal planning, length, physical difficulty, route profile and navigation method can be weighed separately.

History and architectural heritage

The earliest evidence of human presence in the area of Fresnedoso de Ibor dates from the Neolithic period and includes axes and so-called thunderstones. The Castro of Fresnedoso de Ibor, a fortified settlement, is considered a good example of the indigenous cultures of the Iberian Peninsula.

The Iglesia de San Antonio Abad dates from the 16th century. The Ermita de San Matías was completely rebuilt recently after progressive deterioration and is dedicated to San Matías and the Virgen de Guadalupe. It is located west of the settlement in a place called La Herguijuela.

The Ermita de San Bartolomé is located at the Molino de Doña Adelaida in the Sierra de San Bartolomé. It is a masonry building with granite reinforcements at the corners of the apse area. Of the old bridge over the Ibor, only a single pier remains beside the road to Bohonal de Ibor.

Las Candelas, also known as La Candelaria, is celebrated in Fresnedoso de Ibor.
