Nature

Chlum is a protected nature park and a European Site of Community Importance with notable archaeological significance. The Chlum educational trail has ten information panels divided into the themes of natural history and archaeology. Part of the educational trail can be travelled by bicycle and follows a cycle path. Chlum comprises oak-hornbeam forests, flowering beech forests, wet meadows, orchards and white slopes.

Rečkov is home to populations of the plant species Siberian leopard plant and the snail species narrow-mouthed whorl snail. Rečkov also includes fens, Molinia meadows and natural wet alder forests. Příhrazské skály includes Drábské světničky, a rock castle on the Hrada plateau. The Zlatá stezka Českého ráje begins in Mladá Boleslav and leads through Mnichovo Hradiště towards Jičín.

Culture

Mladá Boleslav Castle dates back to the second half of the 10th century and now houses the regional museum. The exhibition uses animations, sound and light effects to make the presentation appealing to visitors, including children. The Škoda Museum is located in original production halls where cars were manufactured until 1928. It presents an interactive multimedia history of the brand across an exhibition area of 1,800 square metres. The collection comprises around 360 objects, including production vehicles, rally cars, prototypes, engines, motorcycles and a bicycle.

The museums in Dobrovice cover sugar production, distillation, sugar beet cultivation and the history of Dobrovice. The area around Dobrovice is described as the birthplace of sugar beet cultivation in the Czech Republic; sugar has been produced there since 1831.

History

Loreta in Kosmonosy is a listed monument built between 1702 and 1708 according to a design by Giovanni Alliprandi. Bělá pod Bezdězem preserves sections of 14th-century fortifications and has a Renaissance château. The château in Benátky nad Jizerou has a historical connection with the astronomer Tycho Brahe. Loučeň Château is surrounded by an English park containing 12 labyrinths and mazes. The memorial museum in Jabkenice is located in the forester’s lodge associated with Bedřich Smetana.

Getting there

Mladá Boleslav can be reached from Prague by car, bus, train or bicycle via signposted cycle paths. Direct trains run from Prague Main Station to Mladá Boleslav, while buses depart from Černý Most and Letňany.
