Lot: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Lot is associated with three Grands Sites d’Occitanie: Rocamadour-Vallée de la Dordogne, Figeac-Vallées du Lot et du Célé and Cahors-Vallée du Lot. Those wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Lot can then continue their accommodation search.

Character and landscape

The Lot Valley between Capdenac and Cahors cuts through the limestone hills of the Quercy Causses. Karst cliffs accompany its course and display shades ranging from white to ochre. Many villages in the Lot Valley are remarkably well preserved. Castles in Lot are often situated on rocky spurs or emphasise natural elevations in the terrain, making them familiar landmarks in the landscape.

Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is a listed site on a cliff 100 metres above the Lot and has 13 historic buildings. The village also preserves a wood-turning tradition associated with historic craftsmen known as the Roubinetaïres.

Nature and trails

The educational trails in the Causses du Quercy explain geology, fauna, flora and local traditions using information panels. Lot has 1,500 kilometres of marked hiking trails, with difficulty levels ranging from very easy to challenging.

The GR651 follows the Célé Valley and offers views of cave villages and landscapes shaped by time. The GR6 allows hikers to include Rocamadour in a long-distance hiking route. The GR65 once crossed Lot through vast landscapes and historically significant sites.

Water and river valleys

Canoeing and kayaking are possible on the Dordogne, the Célé and the Lot, including multi-day trips. Lot offers natural swimming spots on rivers and bodies of water, including several supervised locations.

Culture and history

The Lot département has three departmental museums dedicated to the visual arts, ethnology or history. They present permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. At the Atelier-musée Jean Lurçat, an audio immersion features the voices of Jean Lurçat and his family members. At the same time, the Atelier-musée preserves the atmosphere of the artist’s château; traces of his imagination can be found in the rooms and furnishings.

Pech Merle comprises a one-kilometre-long gallery and seven rooms with mineral formations, prehistoric paintings and engravings.

The Pont Valentré in Cahors is a fortified medieval bridge built from 1308 to around 1380 to strengthen the town’s defences and facilitate trade. It lies on the Via Podiensis and is an important crossing for pilgrims travelling towards Santiago de Compostela. It is approximately a ten-minute walk from Cahors city centre, reserved for pedestrians, connected to a riverside path and freely accessible all year round.

Food and mobility

Lot’s cuisine includes Cahors wine, Rocamadour AOP cheese, black Quercy truffles, walnuts, saffron, melon, Quercy lamb and duck products. Foie gras, truffles, saffron, melon, walnuts, lamb, Rocamadour and wine are also named as characteristic local foods.

The liO-Occitanie bus network enables car-free travel between Cahors and Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. Lot can also be explored without a car using the département’s trains and buses, which serve Cahors, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Figeac, Rocamadour, Souillac and Gourdon.
