Geographical Location

Calviac lies on the high plateaus of the Ségala lotois, which form the western foothills of the Massif Central. The Route Départementale 653 crosses Calviac from southwest to northeast; it was built at the beginning of the 19th century and connects Cahors with the Auvergne.

Nature

The landscape around Calviac consists mainly of forests, heathland, and pastures and fodder areas used for livestock farming. The Ruisseau d’Escalmels, also known as the Escaumels, crosses the Calviac area from southeast to northwest and cuts through granite gorges at Peyratel. At Peyratel, the Ruisseau d'Escalmels enters Calviac through granite gorges.

The gorges of the Ruisseau d'Escalmels are home to the Doradille du Forez (Asplenium foreziense), a fern that is very rare in the Lot. The natural area along the Ruisseau d'Escalmels near Peyratel includes gorge forests as well as wet, riverside, and peaty habitats.

In the 12th century, Calviac was considered the outermost extension of the Realm of Turenne in Haut-Quercy. The Château de Laborie and Château de la Barthe castles are located in the vicinity of Calviac.

The medieval motte, or Roque, of Vayrac led to the establishment of a subordinate castrum; several traces and remains of built structures from the site have survived on an enclosed rocky promontory.
