The façade wall of the medieval parish church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption is probably all that remains; the bell tower was built onto it at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century. The nave and aisles of the parish church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption were completely rebuilt in the 19th century.

Jean-Gabriel Perboyre was born in Montgesty in 1802 and is referred to as China’s first saint. In the church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption in Montgesty, his statue, an altar and a tabernacle form an ensemble that has been protected as a monument historique since 2015.

History

Every year in September, a large gathering is held in honour of Saint Jean-Gabriel Perboyre in Le Puech, his birthplace, and in Montgesty. The Maison Natale de Jean-Gabriel Perboyre can be visited throughout 2026 by prior appointment.

Things to do

The Circuit du Menhir is a 9.5-kilometre, moderately difficult circular trail in Montgesty, marked in yellow, with a stated duration of 2.5 hours. There is a car park at Place de l’église for the Circuit du Menhir.

The Circuit du Menhir offers an optional out-and-back route to the Menhir de Courtis. The Menhir de Courtis dates from 2000 BC.

The Circuit du Menhir leads to Château de Crabilhé.
