History and Villagescape
The earliest texts, dating from 1260, describe Flaugnac as a castrum under sole seigneurial rule. The historic network of lanes has been partially preserved and leads between houses, retaining walls and gardens.
In the hamlet of Capmié, part of the municipality of Flaugnac in the Lupte Valley towards Saint-Paul-de-Loubressac, several mosaics and the remains of a Roman villa also attest to the area's very early settlement.
Trails and Landscape
Flaugnac has a 22-kilometre mountain-biking trail called Chemin des vignes et coeur de village. The Circuit du Castrum is also accessible to mountain bikes.
On foot, the Circuit du Castrum is an easy 7.1-kilometre circular route. It leads from the fortified village of Flaugnac to the opposite hillside, offers views of two valleys and passes through a diverse cultural landscape with a wealth of small-scale heritage features.
The Parcours de la Popie follows the foot of the rock face and offers views of the Lupte Valley.
Nearby, at the foot of Flaugnac along the Lupte, lie the natural meadows of the ZNIEFF Prairies naturelles de la vallée de la Lupte.
Culture
The glass artists Gesta and Saint-Blancat contributed stained-glass windows to the Église Saint-Vincent in Flaugnac.
The chapel associated with the medieval Château de Saint-Privat features a rich painted decoration in the choir, partially uncovered. It depicts the arrest of Christ and his interrogation before the high priest. The chapel as a whole was listed as a historic monument by decree of 31 July 2002. It was rebuilt at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century.
