Culture and History

The now-renovated Château de Cantecor stands on a rocky promontory. Its features include a round tower and an enclosing wall. The Church of Sainte Marie Madeleine d’Alvignac les Eaux also reflects the history of the town: its oldest part, the choir, may originally have been the castle chapel of the Château d’Alvignac. The medicinal use of the water from the Source Salmière made it a recognised spa resort in the 19th century.

Springs

Several fountain complexes form part of Alvignac’s historical and architectural character. The Fontaine de Pénoutou has four livestock troughs; a small iron cross stands above the spring. The Fontaine et le lavoir du Théron feeds a washhouse and a stone livestock trough of exceptional dimensions.

The mineral-rich water of the Source Salmière comes from an aquifer of the Lower Jurassic, or Lias. This is around 200 million years old and lies at a depth of 45 metres. The Source Salmière site offers a picnic area, parking, toilets, wheelchair access and a restaurant.

Walking Routes

Several circular routes explore the surrounding area, with different lengths and durations. Le grand tour d’Alvignac Les Eaux is 15 kilometres long, starts at the car park of the Ferme de Salgues, takes 5 to 6 hours and has a moderate difficulty level.

The Balade autour du château de Cantecor is an easy 2.9-kilometre circular route. It starts at the Château de Cantecor and takes about one hour. Le bois des jonquilles et des ruines de Fonfrèje is an easy 9.5-kilometre circular route starting from the town hall car park and takes about three hours.

Market and Local Offerings

The Marché estival d'Alvignac is located on the Grand’Rue in Alvignac. The food market brings together local producers and craftspeople. Products on offer include fish, fruit and vegetables, cheese, organic wine, saffron, prepared foods, poultry and donkey’s milk products.
