Rocamadour: Vacation Apartments and Holiday Homes

Rocamadour is situated on a 150-meter-high cliff above the Alzou Valley. The town’s medieval pedestrian street has six fortified gates. The sanctuary consists of the Basilica of Saint-Sauveur, the Saint-Amadour Crypt, and several chapels.

Culture

The Notre-Dame Chapel houses the Vierge Noire, or Notre Dame de Rocamadour, a statue from the 12th century made from two pieces of wood. The sanctuary also offers a guided spiritual and historical tour lasting approximately 1.5 hours. In August, the Festival de Rocamadour presents sacred and classical music.

Nature

Rocamadour is located in the Parc naturel régional des Causses du Quercy. The Château stands 80 meters higher above the sanctuary; from there, visitors can enjoy views across the Alzou Valley. The Grotte des Merveilles is a natural cave on the Rocamadour plateau that opens onto the Alzou Canyon. The Grotte Préhistorique des Merveilles contains prehistoric rock paintings dating back approximately 25,000 years. The Grotte des Merveilles welcomes visitors daily from Easter to the end of September.

Trails

The Voie Sainte begins at the hamlet of L’Hospitalet and leads down through the Alzou Valley to the lower town. The Grand Staircase is the main access route to the sanctuary and has 216 steps. The inclined lift connects the parking area at the Château with the sanctuaries. The GR 6, the Voie de Rocamadour, also passes through Rocamadour and is a variant of the Way of Saint James.

Cuisine

Rocamadour AOP is a small cheese from the Causses du Quercy made from raw, full-fat goat’s milk. La Borie d’Imbert offers a free, self-guided tour of the farm focusing on the production of Rocamadour AOP. From 10 a.m. to noon, visitors can watch the cheesemakers shape the Rocamadour AOP there.
