Saint-Cirgues: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The church of Saint-Cirgues contains a Saint-Géraud chapel with a plaster statue of the saint holding a church in one hand and a pilgrim’s staff in the other, as well as a stained-glass window by the Manufacture Gesta de Toulouse. The present-day church was completed in 1855.

Those choosing Saint-Cirgues as a destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.

Culture

The church’s walnut altar was commissioned in 1972 by Father René Lugan after the Second Vatican Council and dedicated to Saint Géraud. The Calvaire de Saint-Cirgues is dated 1786. Saint-Cirgues public school is a Jules Ferry school building constructed in the 1870s.

At Lou Roc and the cross of Saint-Géraud, depressions are said to be the count’s kneeprints; the spot where he is said to have set down his rosary is also located there. Gerbert, the future Pope Sylvester II, is said to have been born around 935 at the Beale (viale) de Picouti in Saint-Cirgues. Monks from Aurillac discovered him as a shepherd because of his intellectual gifts and enabled him to study at the abbey.

The Château de Cézerniac was destroyed during the Wars of Religion. Dressed stones were reused for part of the church and for buildings in the village.

Pilgrimage and Trails

The Way of Saint James that runs through Saint-Cirgues crosses the Ruisseau Noir via the Pont romieu. In 2011, the municipality opened a footpath considered part of the Way of Saint James, which passes north of Saint-Cirgues via Quézac and runs through the hamlet of Cavanié. On 13 October, an interdiocesan pilgrimage in honour of Saint Géraud takes place in Saint-Cirgues, with a procession to the Roc de San Guiral.

The ZNIEFF “Ségala lotois: bassin versant du Célé” consists primarily of small streams, forests, heathland, and more or less wet, acidic grasslands that form peat in places.
