Touzac lies on the left bank within a bend of the Lot River. The oldest surviving parts of the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine parish church date from the 12th century and include a Romanesque choir apse.
Culture and History
The centre of Touzac still displays features of an ecclesiastical enclosure: a village area organised around the church within an enclosing wall. The church was extensively rebuilt around 1695; in the process, two buildings that had originally been separate were joined together. The western bell tower preserves the remains of a second medieval building, which may have been a seigneurial tower.
The actress Marguerite Moreno is also associated with Touzac. She regularly stayed in the village, where she died and was buried. The Source bleue inspired a play of the same name in 1995. The water of the Source bleue, which has been praised for its purity since the year 1000, led to the construction of mills for producing flour as well as manufacturing paper and cloth.
Nature and Trails
The Source bleue is a spring with very clear water, from which underground watercourses fed by infiltrating rainwater emerge. The banks of the Lot, the vineyards, the village, and the historical and natural features of Touzac can all form part of pleasant walks.
The GR652, a Way of St James route, crosses the territory of Touzac and connects Cantal with Lot-et-Garonne via Rocamadour. From Laval de Cère to Touzac, the GR652 runs via Rocamadour and Gourdon. Fishing is possible in the Lot near Touzac.
Winegrowing
Winegrowing has been part of Touzac's local economy since the 19th century. Several wineries produce wines under the Cahors appellation.
