Culture and History
The parish church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption in Carnac has historical ties to the Templar commandery of Lacapelle-Livron and later passed to the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem. The church is believed to have undergone an uncertain construction phase in the 13th century, further building phases during the transition from the late 15th to the early 16th century, and additional work in the second quarter of the 17th century. Its high altar retable is classified as a movable monument; the protection is dated 20 May 1910.
The Church of Saint Simon and Saint Jude in Rouffiac has a single-nave body, a semicircular apse and a southern chapel. The entire structure, including the chapel, is made of hewn stone. Based on its architectural features, the church may date from the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th century.
Landscape
The Lissourgues stream rises in the municipality of Carnac-Rouffiac. In the surrounding area, the Circuit du Lissourgues trail passes through a varied landscape featuring a dry plateau, valleys crossed by streams, watermills, dry-stone walls and stone huts.
In the past, the Lissourgues powered at least eight watermills in the surrounding area. Some sections also feature small cascades and mill weirs that retain water even at low water levels.
