Culture
Only the western residential wing of Château d’Assier has survived; it is richly decorated with sculpted friezes and emblematic elements. The château and its garden can be explored freely. During the school holidays, guided tours and workshops are also offered there for children aged 6 to 12.
Construction of the Église Saint-Pierre d’Assier began in 1540 and was made possible by donations from Galiot de Genouillac. The church has a Latin cross floor plan. Its exterior features include a sculpted frieze and a western portal that honour Galiot de Genouillac with an extensive programme of imagery.
The Pigeonnier d’Assier was built in 1537 and has a cylindrical shape. It is 11 metres high, measures 9 metres in diameter and provides space for 2,300 nesting niches. The Dolmen du Bois des Bœufs is also part of the area’s cultural history: it has been classified as a historic monument since 1889.
Landscape
East of the centre of Assier, three dolmens and tumuli are visible on the limestone causse. The land parcel area covers 260 hectares and has accessible, currently unmarked paths lined with dry-stone walls.
Activities
Free participatory workshops are planned at the Jardin de Galiot in collaboration with the Juin Jardins association. The “Entre Causse et Limargue” cycling route also starts in Assier.
