Jura: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in the Jura can then continue their accommodation search.
Nature
The Jura combines plains, the vineyards and reculées of Revermont, the lake district, and mountain landscapes with mountain streams and waterfalls. Many natural sites in the Jura are preserved or protected by the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park, Natura 2000 areas, and classified natural sites. Particularly impressive are the Hérisson Waterfalls: they consist of 31 consecutive waterfall levels fed by the Hérisson mountain stream, whose source lies in Lakes Bonlieu and Ilay.
The trail along the Hérisson Waterfalls is 7 km there and back, climbs around 300 metres, is classified as difficult, and takes almost three hours for the round trip. The Vallée du Hérisson, Plateau des 7 lacs is part of the Grands Sites de France network.
Lac de Chalain is the largest natural lake in the Jura; its turquoise waters are connected with its geological history. Lac de Vouglans is 35 km long, has emerald-green waters, and is the setting for summer activities.
Getting Around
The Jura has almost 5,000 km of maintained and signposted routes as well as almost 100 official hikes. The Route des Lacs connects museums, exhibitions, craft workshops, local gastronomy, reculées, viewpoints, and natural sites; it can be travelled by car to discover 20 regional lakes.
For cycling, the Jura has 180 km of cycle paths on seven véloroutes, including EuroVelo 6. The region also has four mountain-biking bases marked FFC or FFVélo, two developed bike parks, and two Ludy Parks. In addition, there are more than 2,000 km of marked trails.
The Jura's ski areas include Nordic skiing with 1,000 km of marked trails, snowshoeing, activities with sled dogs, tobogganing, and biathlon.
Culture and Crafts
The Grande Saline de Salins-les-Bains contains a 13th-century underground gallery and a still-functioning 19th-century hydraulic pump. The facility operated for 1,200 years until 1962 and conveyed salt water between 1780 and 1895 through a 21 km-long pipeline to the Saline Royale d’Arc-et-Senans.
The Maison du Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura presents the permanent interactive exhibition « Haut-Jura, Terre Vivante! » about local landscapes, wildlife, flora, know-how, industry, and forests. Workshops, museums, and themed houses in the Haut-Jura showcase traditional and contemporary local crafts and their contribution to the region's development.
The Musée du Jouet in Moirans-en-Montagne presents toys ranging from antiques to retro consoles. At the Fruitière de Grande-Rivière, a discovery gallery offers sections on historical tools, museography, interactive displays, cheese production, and video.
Food and Drink
Comté is produced artisanally every day in more than 150 village cheese dairies, known as fruitières throughout the Jura massif. The Jura has four geographical appellations: Arbois, Château-Chalon, L’Étoile, and Côtes du Jura.
