Fontainebrux: Holiday Apartments and Houses
Nature
Fontainebrux is home to two remarkable pond areas: the Étang de Chevigny and the Étang Romette. The Étang de Chevigny ZNIEFF covers 27 hectares at an altitude of 204 to 205 metres and includes Fontainebrux. Within the Bresse pond network, the Étang de Chevigny is considered one of the most interesting areas for birds and is attractive for breeding and stopovers during migration. It is the only site in the Bresse comtoise where Gadwall and Garganey breed.
The Étang Romette is a 10.32-hectare ZNIEFF located in Fontainebrux, Courlans, Courlaoux and Larnaud. It lies entirely within the Bois des Foulletons. At its far end is a well-developed reed bed; wet alder woods extend from there to grazed meadows. Its rare aquatic flora is also noteworthy, including the regionally protected grass-leaved pondweed and the only known site in the Bresse region for Nitella confervacea.
The Étang des Tartres and its mill are located within the municipalities of Larnaud and Fontainebrux; the Conservatoire acquired the ensemble in June 2023. The Étang des Tartres is considered the most floristically diverse pond in the Bresse region.
History
Fontainebrux originated in the 15th century as a hamlet called Les Charbonnières and became a municipality in 1907. After 1660, Fontainebrux developed through the granting of 400 journaux of land in exchange for a low ground rent.
A memorial site on the « aire de la Résistance » at the northern entrance to Fontainebrux provides information about the history of the FTP camp « Francis », which later became the « Camp Gambetta » and subsequently the « Pierre Semard » battalion.
