Nozeroy: Holiday Apartments and Houses
Nozeroy is situated on a hill overlooking the Val de Mièges and the course of the Serpentine River. Anyone planning a stay in Nozeroy may wish to rent a holiday apartment for the occasion.
History
Nozeroy was founded in 1264 on the Jura’s second plateau. Jean de Chalon made the town his capital and had a first castle built there. Construction of the Château des Comtes de Chalon as a fortress had already begun in 1261 at the southwestern end of Nozeroy’s rocky promontory.
Around 1440, Louis Ier de Chalon-Arlay transformed the Château des Comtes de Chalon into a luxurious residence. Because yellow local stone was used, it was called “la perle du Jura”. The surviving ruins are being consolidated by volunteers in order to preserve them.
The Tour de l’Horloge was the main entrance to the fortified town of Nozeroy and is classified as a historic monument. At the same time, it is one of the few surviving examples of military architecture in Franche-Comté. The Collégiale Saint-Antoine, built in the 15th century in place of a 13th-century chapel, stood on the town walls and formed part of the fortified town’s defence system.
The former Saint-Barbe Hospital was founded in 1481. After the fire of 1639 during the French conquest, it was rebuilt and became a royal hospital. The Église Saint-Antoine in Nozeroy was listed as a historic monument by decree of 26 October 1927.
